Atelier masanii in 2022 has started!
初披露は、寅年にちなんで…
神谷哲史折り紙作品集３より「トラ」をお送りいたします。
Commemorating the zodiac, my first post is "Tiger" listed in "Origami works of Satoshi KAMIYA 3".
ヒダ状の構造をずらして裏面を出すことで、縞模様を再現。
顔の細部もリアルに作り込まれ、折り紙らしからぬ異彩を放っています。
Striped pattern is expressed by shifting the bellows structures and showing the back side of paper.
Face details are built amazingly real, so it is looks not origami.
威厳あふれる金色の虎と、静かな迫力をまとうホワイトタイガー。
あなたのお好みは、どちらでしょうか？
Gold tiger with majesty or white tiger with silent forcefulness, which one do you like?

用意したのは「玉虫紙」。
お茶の水おりがみ会館で買った、とっておきの素材です。

Today's material is "Tamamushi (Iridescent)" which I bought at Ochanomizu Origami Kaikan. (link above)
薄手の和紙に金や銀を塗り、さらに色を付けたゴージャスな逸品。写真では分かりづらいのが残念ですが、星空のようにキラキラ輝く様子に見惚れてしまいます。
Washi paper painted gold or silver and added colors. It's gorgeous!
Unfortunately you can't see its beauty enough in the photo, but it's like a starry sky and I'm fascinated.
色は「金／黒」「白／パール＆黒」。
サイズはカタログ上で約63cm×93cm、実際は65.5cm×99cmくらいでした。
手作りの名残なのか、紙の端に色ムラが見られたので、外周を5mmほどカット。
四辺がキレイになったら、正方形にカットして準備完了です！
The color is "Gold/Black" "White/Pearl&Black".
The size is about 63cm×93cm according to the catalog, actually about 65.5cm×99cm.
There are some color irregularities because it's probably handmade, so I cut each edge 5mm. After that I cut it into square, READY!

で、さっそく折り始めたいところですが…
こんな豪華な素材、失敗したら勿体ない。
しかも相手は工程数256の複雑系。いきなり手をつけるのは非常にハイリスクです。
ということで、セリアの53cmホイル紙で試作する事にしました。
「念には念を」ということで、金＋銀の２枚とも生け贄になってもらいましょう。
I want to start immediately, but it's awful if I failed and waste such a precious material.
In addition, today's model is complex that has 256 steps, so it's risky to go carelessly.
So I decided to try with 53cm foil paper.
Just in case, I spent both gold & silver, as sacrifices.
ふむふむ…
２２等分の網目をつくる以外、仕込みの工程は長くない。
トリッキーな折り方はないけれど、厚みがけっこう出る。
ホイル紙なら問題ないけど、玉虫紙はどうかな…
Hmm...
Preparation processes are not so difficult except 11 equal mesh creases.
There aren't so many complex scene, but thickness appears.
I can fold easily with foil paper, but I'm concerned when I work on Tamamushi.
本作の目玉である「縞模様」は、目印のない「ぐらい折り」が多く、きれいなシマシマを作るのに神経を使いました。
In this model's highlight "Stripe", we must fold without guide creases, so I got nervous to make them properly.
そして、工程194で恐怖の展開が。
「反対側も130-193と同じように折る」
その差、63工程。
そこそこ難しい作品ひとつ分じゃないか！
この区間は反対側に干渉するシーンが多いので、やむを得ないのですが….
あのシマシマをまた最初から繰り返すと思うと、心が折れそうになります。
In step194, I faced with a horrible situation.
"Repeat 130-193 on the other side"
The difference between them is 63, it corresponds to just another complex model!
It's unavoidable because in these processes most steps interfere with the opposite side.
Although, I feel heavy when I imagine making that stripe again...
そんなこんなで、あちこち苦戦しながらも、何とか完成。
Through those difficulties, I could complete the all steps.
玉虫紙の本番に備えて、色んなポーズを試してみました。
忍び寄る姿、低く構えて威嚇する姿。
顔は幅広、首はやや細く、手足はしっかり曲げて。
Then I tried various poses in case of Tamamushi.
Sneaking, menacing, make the face wider, neck is narrow, and bending legs...
猫背にしてみたらどうか…あっ背中が破れちゃった。
でもいいの、試作品だもの。
結局、最初に作ったシルバーの方は、無惨な姿に。
ごめんよ。キミの犠牲は無駄にしない。
本番は、きっと素晴らしい作品に仕上げてみせるよ…！
How about rounding the back...Oh, the back was torn!
It's fine. It's just a prototype.
After all, silver one became miserable.
I apologize, I won't waste your precious sacrifice!
I'm sure that I'll make Tamamushi superb!

ボキボキにいじくり回した試作品のおかけで、いくつか収穫がありました。
◯技術的にはイケる
◯折り筋は強めでＯＫ
◯工程130-193は、145あたりで反対側もやっちゃった方が左右が揃う
（左右が被るけど、何とかなる）
…などなど。
Thanks to the previous prototypes, I got some useful informations.
◯I can make it technically
◯Creases must be pressed firmly
◯In 130-193, both side will be alined when I work on the opposite side around 145
(It doesn't matter if papers interfere)
...etc.
これらの貴重な情報をもとに、満を持して玉虫紙を折り始めました。
Based on these result, I started folding Tamamushi with confidence.
塗料がまんべんなく馴染んだ和紙は、予想以上に厚いです。
そして、手にラメが付着します。
その手で顔を触るもんだから、顔にも付着します。
鏡を見ると、タカラジェンヌみたいなキラキラメイク。（写真はありません）
Washi painted evenly was unexpectedly thick.
And lamé adhered on my hands.
And I touched my face with laméd hand, so my face became like an stage actress. (I didn't take photos)
例のシマシマも問題なくクリア。
顔の細部もキッチリ作る事ができました。
２回の試作がなかったら、悲惨な事態になっていた事でしょう。
I could clear "Stripe" without any problems.
And I could make face details properly.
I would have fail if I hadn't make two prototypes.
さらに余裕ができたので、下アゴを改造して「犬歯」を折り出しました。このアレンジは個人的に大ヒットです！
I had more capacity as a result, I built "fangs" by remodeling jaw.
This modification was a great success for me!
あとは、大切な「整形」です。
白い方は、工程203あたりから「ウェットフォールディング」を導入。
紙を湿らせ、繊維をほぐしながら折ると、乾く頃には折り目が固定されます。
Next, important "Shaping".
For white one, I introduced "Wet folding".
Moisten paper and fold while softening fibers, creases will be fixed when they are dried.
裏面がにじんで黒っぽくなってしまいましたが…まぁ許容範囲ということで。
目や鼻は、色が変わる事でかえってリアルになりました。
Unexpectedly colors on the back side exuded to the surface, but it's acceptable.
On the contrary, eyes & ears turned black, they look real.
金色の方は、濡らすと色落ちするので断念。
その代わり、工程195あたりから全体を揉みほぐし、理想のポーズを意識しつつ、早めに整形を始めました。
For gold one, I didn't do that because the color comes off.
Instead, I started shaping in advance by kneading the entire layers from around step195, and imagining the ideal appearance.
最後はノリ入れ。
シマシマの内側から手足、顔の細部まで、浮いている箇所をピッタリ接着します。
じっくり観察しながら、数日かけて微調整を続け…
試作も含めて、約２週間。
金色の虎＆ホワイトタイガーの完成です！！
Finally, gluing.
I glued firmly inside stripe structure, legs, face details, and any other parts that tend to peel off.
Observing & adjusting carefully over a few days...
Spending two weeks including trials, "Gold tiger" & “White tiger" are completed!!

I'm happy to show you as a memorial to the zodiac.
この本を買った当初からずっと折りたかったけど「難しいだろうなぁ」「いい素材ないなぁ」と、なかなか踏み切れなかったモデル。
新しい素材との出会いに加え、自分のレベルアップも実感できて嬉しく思います。
I've always wanted to play this model since I bought the textbook, but I've hesitated to do "It'll be difficult" "I don't have suitable paper".
This time I'm pleased that I got wonderful materials and realized my skills have improved.
さて。
新しい年の幕開け、どんな事が待っているのでしょうか。
心配ごとが多い世の中ですが、前向きに考えて、穏やかに過ごしていきたいものです。
