クラフト紙で作る巨大昆虫、第２弾は「カマキリ」です。
神谷哲史折り紙作品集３の中でも難しいとウワサの本作。なかなかの強敵でしたが、何とかここまで辿り着けました。

I've been making huge insects with craft paper since last month, the next is "Praying mantis".
This is one of the most difficult model in the textbook "Origami Works of Satoshi KAMIYA 3", but I struggled and barely finished!
無漂白のナチュラル紙ならではの素朴な風合いと、神谷昆虫のリアルな造形が合わさって、木彫り細工のような仕上がりに。
Rustic texture unique to the un bleached natural paper, and real structure characteristic of Mr. Kamiya's works, when both factor merged it changes like a wooden sculpture.
背景も同系色が良さそうなので、茶系の厚紙「タントＮ－１０」を採用。
暖色光のもとiPhone14のポートレートモードで撮影、その後はデフォルト機能を使って低明度＋高精細度、ブラックポイントなどの処理をしました。
I was sure that the background suits the similar color so I adopted brown Tant paper "N-10".
After shooting with my iPhone14 under the warm light, I processed it to low brightness + high definition + high blackpoint, using Apple's default function.
私は木工作家の福田亨さんが手がける立体木象嵌（りったいもくぞうがん）の彫刻と、しっとりじっくり語りかけるような写真が好きなのですが、今回の写真からは、私の琴線に触れた同氏のテイストの片鱗を感じられて大変嬉しく思っています。
いや、勝手に比較するのも福田さんやファンに怒られそうで申し訳ないんですけどね。
少なくとも私は、こういう写真が撮りたかったんです。

By the way I like a three dimensional wooden sculpture designed by the modern artist Toru Fukuda, and his photos that contains some kind of messages.
From today's photos, I felt a certain sence of his taste that fascinated me, I'm so satisfied!
It may be presumptuous that compare my works and his masterpieces without notice, but at least I wanted to take photos like them.

Asides, I'll show you the actual situation. I took them in the kitchen!

さて、レポートです。
この作品は３年前に５３ｃｍホイル紙で作ったことがあります。

Now, let's report.
I've made this model with 53cm foil paper three years ago.
今回は９０ｃｍなので約１.７倍のサイズなんですけど、クラフトの厚みでカマキリの極細蛇腹をクリアできるのか、不安でなりません。
This time I prepared 90cm so it's 1.5 times larger than the last trial, but I'm worried whether it can stand the extremely nallow pleats of mantis.
まぁ、気にしても仕方ない。
「何とかなる」と信じつつ、仕込みを始めます。
９０ｃｍ四方の紙を置くテーブルはないので、先月のクワガタと同様に床で折るのですが、折り筋の細かさはクワガタ以上です。ちなみに腰とヒザへの負荷もクワガタ以上です。
そりゃまぁ床でバッサバッサ折ってるんだから、仕方ありませんねぇ…
書道パフォーマンスやる人も、こんな思いなんでしょうか。
Anyway, I started making creases on believing it'll be fine.
There's no table that can put 90cm paper, so I have to fold it on the floor same as the last month's Stag beetle.
Creases were elaborate and my lower back & knees hurt, more than Stag beetle.
It couldn't be helped, because I was squatting & flapping the paper on the floor for a long time.
I felt sympathy for a Japanese calligraphy performers...
工程４９から、やっと組み立てに入ります。
長いラインの蛇腹は、どんなに注意深く仕込んでも幅が数ミリずつズレてしまうのが難点です。
神谷作品の蛇腹は３等分の倍数が多いので、２－４－８より誤差が出やすいのも要因かと思います。
（単に私が下手なだけかもしれません。笑）
そこで、このズレを現実的な幅に合わせるためのアクションが大事となります。
沈め折りの過程で層のズレが判明したら、仕込んだラインを無視して新しいラインを付け直すんです。
上から下までの全層がピッタリ重なるのが理想ですが、周辺の構造的に難しい場合は、ある程度のレベルで止めたり、ズレの幅を左右対称に合わせたりして妥協しています。
こうした大胆な（というか苦しまぎれの）微調整が、個人的な「神谷蛇腹」攻略のキモです。
The assembling can be started from step49.
It's difficult that the long pleats tend to be misaligned by a few millimeters, no matter how I make creases carefully.
Pleats found in Kamiya's model are often trisection or its multiple, so it's difficult to fold precisely compare to 2-4-8 division.
(Perhaps due to my poor skill...)
Then it's important to adjust these misaligns into the realistic width.
If you find some misaligned layers during open sink, make new creases ignoring the past ones.
The ideal situation is that every layer is piled up equally, but sometimes it's difficult considering the surrounding structure. If so, compromise on a certain accuracy or make the both sides symmetrical.
Such a bold (makeshift) adjustment is important to conquer "Kamiya pleats".
工程１３３は前回もっとも苦戦したポイントですが、今回は意外なほどあっさりクリアできました。少しは上手くなったのでしょうか。
紙が大きいから折りやすいうえ、クラフト紙は丈夫なので、勇気を持ってガシガシ攻められるのも良いです。ホイル紙は折り目が裂けやすいですからね。
ちなみに、こういう「複数の折り筋で一気に折る系」のパターン（コッチの業界では「前川フォース」呼ばれます）は、輪郭から順に折っていくと現在地をロストしにくいです。
Step133 is a process that I struggled the most last time, but unexpectedly I could pass smoothly. I wonder my skill may have been improved a little!?
Craft paper is durable and pretty large so I could work on courageously without hesitation. On the other hand foil paper is easily torn.
Asides, in such a pattern that be folded at once along multiple creases (We call it "Maekawa force"), you won't get lost the current location easily if starting from the outline.

さて、そんなこんなで全体像が見えてきました。
そこそこマトモに見えますが、クラフト紙はホイル紙と違って「紙のもどり（弾力）」があるので整形はかなり大変です。
しかし、そんな事情に構うことなく、テキストは次々と「こう折れ」とムチャな指示を飛ばしてきます。
ここからは、ノリ入れをして紙を密着させつつ、厚みをごまかしながらボキボキと進めていくしかありません。
正解はなく、地味〜な作業が続きますが、カマキリをカマキリらしく仕上げるには、ここからが本番です！
Anyway the overall shape has been appeared.
Although it looks like barely decent, it hardly be shaped because craft paper has elasticity unlike foil paper.
However the textbook mercilessly command me an forceful action "Fold like this!".
From here, I have no choice but to process while ignoring its thickness and sticking the layers with glue.
There's no correct answer and the process is so monotonous, but it's an important preparation to make the ordinal brown paper into real mantis!
まず、おなか。
全てのスキマにノリをぶっ込み、しっとりした状態のまま段折りをキメます。
テキストは６段ですが、厚すぎるので５段に省略しました。これでも結構きついです。
First, abdomen.
Insert the glue into every gap and do pleats fold while keeping wet.
Textbook makes 6 pleats but I omitted it to 5 because the paper was too thick. It's so tough even 5.
ついでに羽根もやっちゃいます。
先端が傷つきやすいので、いっそのこと折り込んじゃいました。
Then I made wings.
Their tips prone to be scratched so I hid by folding inside.
次に胴体。
とんでもない枚数の層が重なっていますが、爪楊枝が入るスキマには「すべて」ノリ入れします。
蛇腹のギザギザは内側だけ密着させても意味がないので、外側にもぬりぬり。
果てしなく時間がかかるんですけど、作業後の差は歴然！
Next, torso.
A ridiculous number of layers are piled up, I glued "All" layers that a toothpick can insert.
Just sticking only the inner side is useless, so it's necessary to do both side.
It takes tremendous time, but after that the appearance changed dramatically!
さらに、ノリが乾く前に整形しておけば、そのまま固定できるんですよね。
バサバサ散らかった状態から、だんだんスリムなボディラインができていく様子は、今しか見ることのできない貴重なシーンです。
And more, the posture can be keeped if shaping before it dries.
From the rough figure, slim body appears gradually, such a scene can be seen only this moment.
触覚は、ノリ入れの効果が特に顕著に出るパーツです。
折り込んだ層をガバッと開いて、未乾燥の白いスティックのりを擦り込むのですが、まるで鮭の塩引きみたいな光景です。
In the antennas, glue's effect appears remarkably.
When opening the layers and rub glue on them, it was like making salted fish.
クライマックスは「鎌」もとい前脚です。
写真の手前がノリ入れ前、奥がノリ入れ後です。全然違いますね。
地味に大変だったのが根本（二の腕）で、数えたら５０枚くらい重なってました。時間かかるわけです。
The highlight is front legs like a scythe.
The front one is not glued, and the back one is glued. You'll see the difference clearly!
It was unexpectedly tough to shape upper arms. About fifty layers were piled up at least I counted. That’s why I had to spend a lot of time.
ノリが乾いたあとに動かすと「ベリッ」と嫌な音とともに紙ごと剥がれてしまうので、両手のポーズをここで決めちゃいます。
When I reshape the dried part, it peels off with a bitter sound. So it must be set the ideal posture in advance.
最後は１番のクセモノ、４本の脚です。
とにかく細くすれば良いのですが、ノリの成分を吸ったボリューム満点のボディを支える責任があります。
吊るすのはカッコ悪いし、景観を損なう「補助輪」をつけるなんてもってのほかですから！
軸が折れないのはもちろん、関節が動かないよう強固に作るため思いついたのは「ダブルクリップ連結作戦」です。
Four legs were the most formidable opponents.
It's better to make them slim as much as possible, but they have an important responsibility to stand its heavy body that contains glues.
It's out of question to hang the body or attach some unfashionable supports.
Of course I had to prevent the leg from breaking, and also, make the joints firmly not to move even a little.
So I came up with "Coalescing clip method".
もう一つ、難点があります。
逆さにしないと乾燥できないことです。
せっかく持ち上げた上半身を折るわけにはいかないので、苦しまぎれに取ったポーズがコレ。
う〜ん、あられもない姿です。
There's another problem.
The whole body can't be dried unless it be turned up side down.
I wanted to maintain the torso & abdomen a correct shape, so I made it stand in a certain posture. Oh, what a shameful.
さて、脚がパリパリに乾いたところで、やっと自立させることができました。完成です！
テーブルなどのツルツルした床面では脚が外側へ開きがちですが、ザラザラした材質なら適度な姿勢をキープできました。背景に使ったタント紙でも合格点。
After all legs are dried, it finally standed independently. It's completed!
On the slippery floor some legs tend to move a little, but on a gritty surface it could keep the moderate posture. Tant paper that I used as a background is also adoptable.
顔の造形がリアルにできたのも大きな収穫です。
口元は９０ｃｍで作っても、爪楊枝を駆使しないと整形できませんでした。前回の５３ｃｍホイル紙では、結構ごまかしちゃったんですよね。
また、大きな「眼」の存在に初めて気づきました。ここのパーツ、眼だったんかいな。
I'm satisfied that I could make the face structure real.
I couldn't shape a jaw unless using a toothpick, even making with 90cm paper.
When I made it with 53cm foil paper, I compromised reluctantly.
And in this trial, I found "eyes" for the first time! I haven't recognized the parts as eyes.
厚すぎて折りきれず、側面から見ると微妙な感じですが、これはもうグラシン紙や薄葉紙などの極薄素材を使わないとムリでしょう。
触覚の丸みもバランス良く仕上がり、個人的には結構満足です。
Looking from the side it's a little incomplete due to its thickness, but we can't make it an ideal shape unless using Glassine or the other extremely thinner paper.
The antennas have been finished in moderate curve, I'm satisfied too.

実はカマキリじゃなくて、もっと無難なやつを作ろうと思ってたんですけどね。
中くらいの難度のやつ。
ほら、完成サイズも大きくなるし。
でもなぜかエキサイトしたくなって、あろうことか数年前に散々苦しんだ神谷カマキリを折りたくなっちゃったのでした。
当時あれだけ「もう嫌だ」と思ったのに…
ラーメン二郎のようなもんなんですかねぇ。
まぁ、８時間くらいかかったけど、楽しかったから良しとしましょう。
Actually I was going to make an easier one, medium difficulty. If so the completed size will be pretty big.
However unconsciously I wanted to be excited, I felt like making "Kamiya mantis" that I struggled terribly. I should have felt it's enough!
Anyway it's alright. I enjoyed though it took about eight hours.
ところで、展示終わったらどこに保管しようかな…
前回のクワガタに負けず劣らず、このデカさは普通に困ります。
でもインパクトあるから出張講座にも持って行きたいけれど、持ち運びが大変そうです。
新しいチャレンジには、新しい悩みがつきものですねぇ。
By the way I have no idea where to store this model after exhibition...
I'm annoyed by its hugeness same as the previous Stag beetle.
These will impress many people so I'd like to bring to an external origami class, it'll be difficult to transport.
New challenges come with new concerns...
