「木の折り紙」であじさい折り！木製ピラミッドがもたらした一週間の苦節／Pyramid with "Wooden origami"

旅行帰りの同僚が私を呼び出して、こう言いました。
One day my colleague said

「これ見た瞬間、◯◯さん(私)が思い浮かんで…」
"When I found this, it reminded me of you..."

何だか叙情的ですね。
貴方と同じ香水を街中で感じると、ついて行きたくなっちゃうの…と言ったのはKinKi Kidsでしたね。

今日の素材は「木の折り紙」です。

Welcome to Atelier masanii.
Today's material is "Wooden origami".

折り紙…いや、木ですね。能登杉。
開封すると、ふわっと心地よい木の香りに包まれます。
ログハウスに入った瞬間のような、どこか懐かしい匂い。
The WOOD has pleasant scent like a moment that I enter the log house. It even feels me nostalgia.

この木目調（というか木）を活かすのは…
そうですね。
あじさい折りですね。
これでピラミッドを作ったら面白そうです。
よし。
角材を積み上げたような「斜め折り四段ピラミッド」を作ってやろうじゃないかッ！！
しかし、それが数々の試練の始まりなのでした。
I was convinced that the wooden pattern suits Hydrangea.
It'll be fun if I make pyramid like a stack of blocks!
However, this is the beginning of a number of ordeals...

まず、素材の分析です。
思った以上に柔軟なのは、強固で粘性の高い、ロウのようなツナギがたっぷり染み込んでいるからでしょうか。
パキッと割れてしまうかと思いきや、ぐにゃぐにゃ曲がってくれます。
表側はワックスを重ね塗りしたようにツルツル。折ってもささくれません。
裏側は「木そのもの」。ザラザラしていて、木目に逆らって折ると少しトゲが出ます。

First, analysis of the material.
It's softer than I expected. I wonder that firm & high viscosity, wax-like filling permeates enough.
I anticipated that it tears soon, but bends freely.
The surface is smooth and not be harshly if you fold.
The back side is exactly WOOD. It'll be harshly and appears some thorns when you fold against the grain.

Now, let's begin.
If you want the diagram, refer to the textbook.

ルート分割法で5等分、そこから20×20+40×40等分。
最初の「合わせ折り」から、だんだん暗雲が立ち込めてきました。

Dividing each edge into 20, and diagonal lines into 40, with a certain method.
I had a bad feeling in the first assembling after making creases.

なかなか合わさらないばかりか、ササクレが指の柔らかいところを攻撃してくるのです…

It hardly assembles and some thorns attack my fingertips...

そして、 裏表を反対に仕込んでしまったことが発覚。
これでは表面がパリパリして、風化しかけた貧相なピラミッドになってしまう！
ということで、あえなく撃沈。

And more, I realized that I made it up side down.
This will be gritty & poor pyramid!!
So I regrettably gave up.

やっぱりパッケージの裏に書いてあった折り鶴くらいで済ませとけば良かったのかも… 
I thought it had better to make paper crane listed in the package..

いや、妥協は嫌だ。
やるぞ。
裏表をしっかり確認して、２回目のチャレンジです！

No.
I won't compromise.
I can do it!
Checking the front & back side, I'll try again.

やっぱり表側を山折りにすると、トゲトゲがほとんど出ません。
これなら綺麗なブロックができそうです。

As I expected, thorns didn't appear in the right direction. In this way it'll work well.

さっき苦労した合わせ折りもクリア。

I could pass the action that I struggled on the first attempt.

しっかし、この厚みを5mm間隔で折るのは、なかなかのパワープレーです。
指が鬱血するほど全力で押し付けても、マス目が離れてしまいます。 
凄まじい弾力です。

Anyway, it needs pretty strong grip to fold such a thick material at 5mm intervals.
Even if I press hard that my fingers become swollen, each block is gradually separated. It's amazing elasticity.

完成間近になっても収束の兆しが見えないので、ノリで接着することに。
しかし、それが災いしました。

They don't get closer near completion, I tried to use glue.
But it was a serious mistake.

一晩ほっといた翌朝。
あれ…
接着部が黒ずんでやがるッ！！！！！

Next morning after overnight pressing, I found the bonded parts turn black!

中の成分まで完全に酸化してます。
ノリ成分を取り除いてもダメでした。
あああ…
仕方ねぇ、３枚目だ！！
They're completely oxidized to the inside.
I removed the glue immediately, it's too late.
Oh my...
There's no choice, I'll try again!

私ギャンブルやらないんですけど、やったら身を滅ぼす気がするんですよね。
一度突っ込んだら途中で終われないんだもの。 

I don't play gambling, because once I'm immersed I can't stop.

今度こそは紙（木）が戻らないように、爪でゴリゴリやっちゃいます。
それでも破れる気配すらないのは、さすがの強度。
ゴムのような樹脂？を染み込ませているのでしょうか？
メーカーの徹底した「割れないこだわり」を感じます。

This time I pressed firmly with my nails so that the paper (wood) doesn't get unfolded.
It still durable and doesn't tear, I wonder that there's a special resin like gums.
The manufacturer may produce with a pride. 

ダメ押しとして、一層折るたびに本やダンベルを駆使してプレス。
一度しっかり潰せば、意外と戻りが少ないことも判明しました。

To make doubly sure, I pressed with heavy books and dumbbells every time folding one layer.
I noticed that the paper (wood) doesn't get unfolded as much as I worried, once it was pressed firmly.

長期的にどれだけ持つか分かりませんが、少なくとも裏面はバキバキに折れます。

It's not sure that the creases will keep being folded in the long term, at least the back side is being folded almost completely.

端っこのカドはなかなか頑固で苦労しましたが…
３度目の正直、ついに完成です！！！

Although it was difficult to finish the tips on the four edges...
Finally completed!!!.

日光に透かすと、規則的な模様がハッキリ出てくれます。綺麗に仕上がって良かったです。
めでたしめでたし。

When being seen through the sunlight, regular mesh pattern appears.
I was relieved to make it safe.

折り紙の活動を公言していると、今回のように周りの人が覚えていてくれて、ご当地の素材やグッズをいただくことが時々あります。嬉しい限りです。
中には「大掃除したら出てきた」といって、古い千代紙や書籍をくれる方もいらっしゃいます。大切にしますね。
When I profess my Origami activity on a daily basis, my friends remember it and sometimes they bring special papers or goods like this time. I'm grateful for their  wonderful gift.
Some say "I found this during housecleaning" and give me rare traditional washi papers or vintage books. I'll treat them preciously.

今回は思わぬ苦労が待っていましたが、こういう出会いも成長のチャンス。新しい挑戦ができて良かったです。
いつも同じことばかりじゃ芸もない。筋肉と同じで、脳にも適度な負荷をかけないとね。

Unexpectedly this time it processed so hard, but there was the chance to raise my skill. It was a meaningful new challenge.
It's boring if I repeat the same way. Moderate load to my brain is important, like muscle training.
